On 26 November, we hosted our latest CEEC webinar—an hour dedicated to making Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) more accessible to researchers and developers working with HPC software. CI/CD can feel like a big leap if you’ve never used it before, but the session showed just how transformative even simple workflows can be for code quality, collaboration, and reproducibility.
With 24 participants from across Europe, the webinar brought together a diverse group of HPC users, software developers, and research engineers—all looking for practical guidance on how to introduce more automation into their development processes and some ready to share their own experience.
The presentation walked through the CI/CD landscape step by step:
- What is CI?
An introduction to automated testing, validation, and code quality checks—why they matter and how they support large, collaborative research efforts.
- What is CD?
A look at deployment workflows, from packaging to continuous delivery, and how automation reduces errors and improves reproducibility.
- Tools for both CI and CD
A guided tour of widely used platforms, including several developed within European projects. The speaker compared strengths, limitations, and typical use cases so newcomers could understand not just what exists, but when to use it.
To make these ideas concrete, the talk also integrated examples from the waLBerla project, demonstrating how CI/CD pipelines can look in practice for scientific software teams.
As EuroHPC systems continue to scale, so do the software ecosystems around them. Reliable workflows are essential—especially for teams spread across institutions and countries. CI/CD helps ensure sustainability, maintainability, and reproducibility, all of which are critical for long-running European projects and lighthouse codes.
This webinar is part of CEEC’s ongoing effort to support the European research software community with practical, hands-on knowledge transfer.
